The images below were all generated with a scanline ray
tracer I wrote using IVTrace, and API
for ray casting within an Open Inventor scene.
For each pixel a ray is sent into the scene. If an object is hit then
n number of rays are randomly sent into the scene to collect the total
amount of emissive light for each level of recursion.
